More equality and light for women

On this International Women's Day, the FHCQ would like to salute the tremendous contribution of all those who, in the shadows or in the light, work every day to strengthen the cooperative housing movement and solidarity in our communities.

In these troubled times, which undermine some of our hopes for a better world, more just and better anchored in the values of mutual aid, I invite us to take a step back and see how far we have come in the long struggle of women for equality.

Yes, there is still a lot to be done and there is no denying it, but it is also imperative to underline the essential contribution of women to the creation of collective wealth in our cooperatives and in our neighborhoods.

I am thinking of all these mothers, heads of single-parent and nuclear families, these builders at the origin of the movement, these women from all walks of life who, beyond their professional and family commitments, contribute to our collective project and to the enrichment of our society through a true commitment to the cooperative values we cultivate.

We must see the signs of this inexorable progression of women in all areas and more particularly in our movement and our federation. In this regard, we can be proud of the female leadership that is now being exercised at the FHCQ.

Women have taken their place in the Federation. They are now in the majority on the Board of Directors and there is no doubt about the quality and thoroughness of their commitment. Through their exemplary contribution, Julie, Véronique, Khadija, Patricia and Line are paving the way for the new world we all hope for. They are, like billions of others on this planet, sources of light that carry the ideal that we live in.

It is not nothing and it is far from being finished.

Happy March 8 to all women,

Patrick Préville
Executive Director, FHCQ
